Religious School Family Education

“A Jewish home is where Judaism is at home.” – Abraham Joshua Heschel

Family Education at Melville Jewish Center provides families and individuals the opportunity to celebrate the joys of Judaism in a communal setting, as well integrating ritual, practice and values into their home lives. We concentrate on promoting Jewish values and learning through interactive student-parent workshops for each grade in the Religious School.

Religious School Family Education Programs include:

Kidz Club – Learn the rituals for Havdalah and how it connects to Shabbat.  Make your own Havdalah kit and enjoy milk and cookies while leading a Pajama Havdalah Service.

Gimel – Learn the rituals for family celebration of Shabbat and how it strengthens family life.  Make delicious Challah (even the chocolate chip kind!)

Dalet– Learn the attitude of gratitude through blessings.  Participate in several activities that reinforce food blessings, nature blessings and blessings for ritual objects, such as tefillin and tallit.

Hei– Celebrate Israel’s past by meeting our nation’s founders and how these people shaped the land of Israel.

Vav – Students participate in several mitzvah projects throughout the year which are showcased during their Shabbat service by presenting posters of highlights from their mitzvot.

Zayin – Families will take a trip to the Glen Cove Holocaust Museum & Tolerance Center as a culmination to the Holocaust curriculum studied in class.
